paepae. 1. n. Beam, bar. As (a) the beam across the front of a whare; called also paepae āwhā, paepae kaiāwhā, paepae kainga-āwhā, or paepae roa. ‖ J. v, 151. (g) The wooden spreader for fish-hooks; = paepae roa. (h) A piece of wood placed across the path of anyone for the purpose of makutu. The term tō paepae is applied to a woman or man who has been deserted after marriage.
