Whāriki. 1. n. Anything spread on the ground or on a floor; floor mat, etc. Used of leaves, etc., on which food is laid in a hangi, or which are used to cover anything. Ka haere a Takarita ki te tiki whariki hei tapatu kumara.
2. v.t. Carpet, cover with mats, etc. Ka wharikitia te roro o te whare ki te takapau, hei nohoanga mo te manuhiri (T. 192).
3. Lay anything out to cover the ground, etc.; spread out, strew on the ground. Na te tangata to kete kai i wharikitia iho ai (M. 127).
4. v.i. Lie flat, lie spread out as a covering. Te ao o te tonga, e whariki atu ra na runga i nga hiwi (S.).
5. a. Flat, spread out. He kino te rauawa o te waka nei, he whariki rawa hoki.
