whiti - to cross; shine, rise
Whiti (i). 1. v.i. Cross over, reach the opposite side. Na ka whakawhiti a Kupe i te moana o Raukawa, a ka whiti (T. 109).
2. Change, turn. Me te ao mauru, e whi te whakawhiro kia whiti ki te tonga-paraki (M. 157). Whiti tau rawa ake, ka mate nga kumara. Whiti ra runga, be inverted, be contrary. Ka kiia ko matou ki te moana, na ka whiti ra runga anake, ko ratou ka riro ki te moana.
3. v.t. Pass through. Ka whiti te tae te papa o te iramutu (Pi. 175, 2).
4. Turn over, prise, as with a lever. Ka tikina te titoki hei whiti, ara hei whakaara ki runga; e popoki ana hoki te riu o te waka ki raro.—Katahi ka whitia e te iwi ra te kahararo, ka pokia te kaharunga.
5. Change. Tunui ki te po whitia mai ki te ao na (M. 369).
whakawhiti. 1. v.t. Convey across.
2. Exchange.
3. Cross over. Hei kawe i au nga whaka-whitinga o Whangaroa i runga (M. 206).
4. Set about crossing. Na ka whakawhiti a Kupe i te moana o Ruakawa, a ka whiti (T. 109).
5. n. Sail for a canoe. Ka rere mai te tuakana, tapahia ana te rahiri ka motu, ka whakaarahia te whakawhiti rawhara (M.M. 185).
6. Return present.
7. The carved boss or check at the end of the handle of a mere, to which the tau, or thong, was attached; also applied to a similar boss which was sometimes carved halfway down the handle of a paddle or of a pouwhenua.

2. A light rude fence of sticks; probably only when inserted as bows in the ground.

2. Affect by recitation of a charm, bewitch. Hoatu, whitia ki te Poutama, ki te whiti a Rangahua.
