whakawhiro. 1. n. A charm repeated over a burning brand which was thrown into the sea with the object of making a gale clear up. Te whakawhiro o Mateoro (M. 155).

2. v.t. Affect by such a charm. Me te ao mauru e whi te whakawhiro, kia whiti ki te tonga-paraki, he hau roki moana (M. 157).

whirowhiro. 1. v.i. Whirl, swirl, as an eddy in a stream. ‖ tawhiro.

2. n. Podiceps rufopectus, dabchick or little grebe. = taihoropi, taratimoho, tokitoki, totoipio, etc.
